The image size checker weighs every image a page serves — today, in bytes, the way your visitors download them — and what the same images would weigh delivered properly. The compressor takes your own files and hands them back smaller.
The point of a tool is that it can be checked. The «today» figure comes from asking your server for each image the way a browser does; the «delivered properly» figure comes from encoding the same image at the size your page actually draws it. Nothing is inferred from a percentage.
What the two numbers mean: «today» is what your visitors download right now, measured image by image; «delivered properly» is the same images with the size and format the page actually needs. The gap between the two is the only honest figure an optimization tool can quote you — any other one is an estimate dressed as a promise.
The compressor works the other way round: nothing is measured from a distance, because the file is already yours. It runs entirely inside your browser, so your images are never uploaded anywhere. That is not a policy we ask you to trust — open the network tab while it works and you will see no request leave.
What these tools do not do: they do not sell, do not ask for an e-mail and do not keep what you gave them. The URL you paste is used to weigh the images and then it is dropped; the files you drop on the compressor never leave your device at all. The privacy page says exactly what this service keeps, and these tools keep less than that.
How to read the checker's result: the gap between the two numbers is not a percentage off a brochure. It is what your own images weigh today versus what the same images weigh served at the drawn size in a modern format. And if the gap comes out small, that is also a result: your site is already well served, and finding that out was free.

Each one arrives the same way this pair did: saying what it measures, how, and on what sample. A tool without a published method is a promise, and we do not ship promises.
